Not all motorcycle insurance policies are created equal, which is why choosing the right coverage can be a overwhelming task, especially if it's your first time purchasing specialty insurance.
Insurance isn't a choice – it’s the law. Of course, this doesn't mean that you have to buy the most expensive coverage available. Basic Liability is the minimum coverage you can have in most states. You can purchase higher coverage limits if you need it, but it's not a necessity.
Much like car insurance, liability coverage is required by law in most states. Comprehensive coverage and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage are optional coverages that you may wish to add to your policy. Keep reading for a brief description of the different coverage options for your motorcycle.
Motorcycle liability insurance covers any damage or harm you may cause to property or other people in the event you are deemed to be at-fault in an accident or crash. However, it doesn't cover you or your bike. Some policies may include coverage for a guest commuter as well, but this is not guaranteed.
Collision insurance covers damage to your motorcycle. Even if the accident is your fault, this coverage will still be valid.
This motorcycle insurance coverage protects your bike from non-accident related hazards, including theft, fire and acts of vandalism.
This coverage provides coverage if you are involved in an accident caused by a driver other than yourself, and the other driver is either has inadequate or no insurance at all. This provisional coverage will help not only pay for medical treatment but also covers lost wages and other damages or injuries to you and your passengers. Your bike would be protected as well if your policy includes this uninsured motorist property damage coverage.
Tailor Your Motorcycle Insurance Policy to Meet Your Needs
Most insurance companies allow you to design a motorcycle insurance policy that will provide the type and amount of coverage you desire. You may only want liability coverage, or perhaps you want to add uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage or comprehensive coverage. It really all depends on factors such as your budget, age, type of motorcycle you have and how often you ride.
