You’re supporting a family on a single income. Anything that will save you money on big bills like single moms auto insurance sounds like a GREAT option!
Being on your own, you need to be efficient. There's no time for waste, so you map your life. You've figured out the shortest routes between daycare/work/home/play dates/grocery shopping, getting them all as close together as possible. Heck, you have to RACE between jobs to pick up the kids from school and drop them off at the sitter's with just enough time to clock in for the pm shift. A hefty commute is not in the cards for you.
It's pretty likely that you log fewer miles than the average driver as a result. Who has time for driving long distances?
That's is why "Pay As You Drive" insurance could be a fantastic option for you. Here's what you need to know:
Two large insurers are now offering pay as you drive discounts. Progressive's program uses a gadget they plug into your car that tracks the number of miles you actually drive, the time of day, and how aggressive you are with the car. Every six months the driver sends the device to Progressive, which then calculates the insurance rate.
But if you're taking out all that pent-up single moms frustration on the road, then beware. The device they install not only measures miles. It also monitors key driving performance indicators. Speeding, hitting the brakes hard consistently, taking tight turns or other road acrobatics could cancel out your low mileage savings.
A better option for you might be the GMAC program. They've partnered with OnStar for a low mileage discount program. Their program only reports your odometer readings (the number of miles you drive). Of course, this only applies if you have a car equipped with OnStar.
As more and more states are adopting the Pay As You Drive concept, more companies will carry this coverage for single moms auto insurance. Stay tuned for developments where you live.
