Car Features for Senior Drivers

Question: I’m in the market for a new vehicle that has car features for senior drivers. I want something sleek, fun to drive and something the ladies will notice. But I know I probably need something that’s easier to handle than I had when I was 25.

What should I look for in new car features for senior drivers?

Answer: You can find the perfect car, beautiful to look at, fun to drive and maybe even an older chick magnet and still get exactly what you need in safety features for older drivers. Manufacturers are waking up to the fact that there are a LOT of us over-65 drivers (and our numbers are growing).

The comfort and safety features you’ll want depend on your physical needs. Assuming you want a car that will age well along with you, look for these features.

  • Wider mirrors and bigger dashboard dials that cater to aging eyes. And power options for adjusting those mirrors
  • Extendable visors to protect eyes from glare
  • Seats that adjust in several directions with easy controls. Six-way seats offer lumbar support, height and tilt controls and other comfort and safety features.
  • Keyless entry and ignition and easy-open doors that require less muscle and dexterity to operate
  • Antilock brakes to help you keep control of the car and not have to pump the brakes to stop
  • Head restraints that reduce neck injuries
  • Higher seat height—easier to get into and you can avoid having to “climb out” of the car
  • Thicker steering wheels that require less hand and wrist strength to turn. Also ones that tilt and telescope for easier adjustment
  • Stability control to help compensate for diminished reaction time
